FxPro stock CFDs & ASX200 angle for Australia
Index and share CFDs are leveraged price exposure, not ASX cash share ownership.
75%+ of retail investor accounts lose money trading CFDs.
FxPro offers CFDs on indices and single stocks (availability depends on entity and account). For Australian traders, the ASX200 angle means trading index CFD exposure tied to Australian equity benchmark moves, not buying the underlying cash basket on the ASX through an AFSL stockbroker. You do not own shares. You take leveraged price risk with financing and gap risk.

CFD vs holding ASX shares
Cash equities via an Australian broker: you own shares (subject to that broker's custody model), you may receive dividends as shareholder of record, and AFSL/AFCA frameworks may apply depending on the firm. Stock or index CFDs: you have a contract with the CFD provider referencing a price. Dividends may appear as cash adjustments. Corporate actions are handled under CFD terms, not CHESS sponsorship myths.
If your goal is long-term ownership of CBA or BHP with voting rights, a CFD is the wrong tool. If your goal is short-term directional exposure with leverage, a CFD is a tool with sharp edges.
ASX200 index CFD mechanics
An ASX200-style index CFD tracks the benchmark's price for P&L purposes under the broker's contract specs. Contract size, tick value, trading hours, and margin rates are set by FxPro for your entity. Hours often extend around related futures liquidity, which is not identical to the ASX cash session open/close.
Gaps around RBA decisions, US leads, and local data prints can move the index CFD faster than casual traders expect. Stops are orders, not promises. Overnight financing applies when you hold across funding points.
Single-stock CFDs
Where offered, single-stock CFDs let you go long or short price exposure on listed names. Shorting via CFD is not borrowing shares through an Aussie prime broker; it is the CFD provider's synthetic exposure. Hard-to-borrow realities can show up as wider spreads, trading halts on the CFD, or adjusted financing.
Earnings and trading halts on the underlying can gap the CFD. Size positions as if a gap can erase a tight stop.
Costs that matter on index tickets
- Spread on entry and exit.
- Commission if your account type charges it on the instrument.
- Overnight financing / swaps on held positions.
- Currency conversion if the CFD P&L currency differs from your Wallet.
AUD Wallet (listed currency; verify live) can simplify P&L tracking for Australian-focused index trading. See deposits and spreads.
Platforms for index and stock CFDs
MT5 and cTrader are common choices for multi-asset CFD books. MT4 may have a narrower instrument set depending on build. Chart the instrument you will trade, not a proxy FX pair, when you rehearse risk.
Deep-dive: platforms. Strategy testing: demo account.
Regulation reminder for AU equity traders
Moving from an AFSL stockbroker to an offshore CFD provider is a regulatory step-change. FxPro is not ASIC-regulated and does not hold an AFSL. Australian clients are commonly reported on FxPro UK Limited (FCA FRN 509956). AFCA does not apply. If you need Australian licensed share advice or AFCA, stay inside AFSL channels for that activity. Full detail: legal Australia.
Tax note (not advice)
CFD gains and losses can have tax consequences in Australia. Treatment depends on your facts. This site does not provide tax advice. Read CFD tax Australia as general information only, then speak to a registered tax agent.
Position sizing for index CFDs
Index CFDs move in points. Point value times your lot size is your dollar risk per point. A stop that looks tight in points can still be large in AUD when the contract multiplier is ignored. Calculate risk in Wallet currency before you click. If AUD Wallet is available on your path, keep P&L and risk in one unit so you are not converting in your head mid-trade.
Gap risk around RBA days, CPI prints, and US equity leads deserves wider stops or flat books. Scalping an index CFD into a scheduled event without a plan is gambling with extra charts. Session notes also live on scalping.
Shorting and hedging caveats
Short index or stock CFDs can hedge a long cash portfolio in theory. In practice, basis risk, financing, and tracking error mean the hedge is imperfect. A CFD short is not a perfect mirror of your CHESS-sponsored holdings. If you need formal portfolio advice, that is AFSL adviser territory, not an affiliate page.
Corporate actions on single-stock CFDs follow broker terms. Expect adjustments, not shareholder letters. If voting rights or DRP participation matter to you, use a share broker.
When an AFSL share broker is the better tool
Buy-and-hold Australian equities, SMSF constraints that forbid your intended CFD setup, and any need for AFCA on the product all point away from offshore CFDs. FxPro's job here is leveraged directional trading and hedging-style exposure for people who accept the entity trade-off. If that is not you, stop reading affiliate reviews and open an AFSL account that matches the job.
If that is you, verify symbols, demo the ticket, fund with buffer, and keep statements for tax records. Deposit ops: deposits. Open flow: open account.
One more operational note: index CFD liquidity and spreads can widen into the Australian cash open and around major US prints. If your strategy needs tight markets, sit out those windows rather than forcing tickets. Compare all-in costs on spreads and keep the ASIC gap honest on legal Australia. This desk sells the tool and the trade-off in the same breath.
For readers comparing ownership products: an ASX ETF held at an AFSL broker is a different animal from an ASX200 CFD on FxPro. Different custody, different dispute path, different financing, different tax facts to discuss with your agent. Pick the product that matches the job, then pick the broker. Do not reverse that order because an affiliate CTA looks shiny.
