CFD tax Australia: information only
This is not tax advice. Speak to a registered tax agent about your facts.
75%+ of retail investor accounts lose money trading CFDs.
Not tax advice
Nothing on this page is tax advice, financial product advice, or a recommendation. FxPro Australia does not hold an AFSL. CFD gains and losses can be taxable or deductible depending on your circumstances, intention, and record-keeping. Confirm with a registered tax agent or qualified adviser. August 2026.
ATO materials discuss CFDs and similar products in public guidance that changes over time. Do not rely on a blog paraphrase when you lodge. If a sentence here conflicts with current ATO guidance or your adviser's view, ignore this page.
What traders usually track
People typically keep trade confirmations, monthly statements, swap/financing lines, conversion history, and deposit/withdrawal records. If you use an AUD Wallet, reconciliation can be cleaner than mixing five currencies without a ledger. AUD is listed as an FxPro account currency on the Gen-Info GM PDF; verify live.
Export CSV or PDF statements on a fixed schedule (monthly is common). Name files by tax year. Capture corporate action adjustments on stock CFDs if they appear. Index CFD overnight financing is easy to miss when you only screenshot closed P&L.
Entity path (commonly reported FxPro UK Limited, FCA FRN 509956) does not remove Australian tax reporting obligations that may apply to you personally. AFCA does not apply to that broker path; tax is a separate system entirely. See legal Australia and review.
Common confusion points (still not advice)
Traders confuse broker country with tax residency. An FCA UK client agreement does not automatically mean "UK tax only" for an Australian resident. Others confuse CFD P&L with share capital gains treatment. Others assume losses are always usable the way they hope. Those are facts to ask a registered tax agent, not to invent on an affiliate site.
GST, FEIT, and other regimes can interact with some products for some people. We will not invent a one-line rule. If you trade stock CFDs referencing Australian names, read stock CFDs for product mechanics, then take the tax questions to a professional.
Practical ops before year end
- Download full-year statements while the account is still open.
- Reconcile Wallet currency conversions to bank AUD amounts.
- Separate personal spending from trading funding in your bank feed.
- Book time with a registered tax agent who has seen CFD statements before.
- Do not wait until lodgement week to discover missing swap lines.

Multi-currency mess
Traders who fund AUD, hold USD Wallet equity, and trade instruments settled in other currencies create a reconciliation job. Your tax agent will ask for a coherent trail. Exporting one month of platform P&L without Wallet conversion history is how lodgement weeks go bad.
If Direct offers an AUD Wallet on your path, using it can simplify the bank side of the story. AUD is listed as an FxPro account currency on the Gen-Info GM PDF; confirm live. Deposits: deposits.
What this desk will not write
We will not invent a capital gains discount rule for your CFD book. We will not invent a "overseas broker means no ATO interest" claim. We will not invent deductible categories for your losses. Those sentences would be hallucinations dressed as helpfulness.
We will say: keep records, read current ATO materials yourself, and hire a registered tax agent who has seen CFD statements. Broker regulation (no AFSL for FxPro; commonly reported FCA FRN 509956; AFCA does not apply) is separate from tax residency rules that may apply to you.
Statements you should export
Export closed trade reports, open position snapshots at year boundaries if relevant, financing/swap ledgers, and Wallet transaction history. If you changed base currency mid-year, note the date. If you transferred between trading accounts, keep the internal transfer IDs.
Stock CFD corporate actions can adjust cash. Index CFD rolls and financing can dominate multi-week holds. Do not hand your tax agent a single screenshot of equity curve and expect a clean lodgement. Product mechanics: stock CFDs.
Broker entity vs tax residency again
People repeat "FCA broker means UK tax" as folk wisdom. Your Australian tax residency questions are not answered by an affiliate page. FxPro's commonly reported AU path (FxPro UK Limited, FCA FRN 509956) still leaves you with Australian reporting questions that may apply to you personally. AFCA does not apply to that broker path. Legal facts: legal Australia.
